One of the variants of the Boeing B-47 Stratojet is the XB-47. This was a two-prototype and was built as 450-2-2 and 450-1-1 powered by 6 Allison turbojet engines. Another version is called B-47A. These first ten designs were delivered in 1950, and its configuration was close to the original XB-47 models.
The Consolidated B-24 Liberator was a 4-engine, twin-tail heavy bomber designed by Consolidated Aircraft of San Diego. Its first flight was on December 29, 1939, and it began service in 1941. The B-24's spacious, slab-sided fuselage was built around a central bomb bay with two compartments that could accommodate up to 8,000 pounds of ordnance each.
Between October 8 and 14, 1943, the Eighth Air Force flew 1,342 heavy bomber sorties, losing a total of 152 bombers (11.3 percent), with another 6 percent receiving heavy damage. In 1952 Washington and the nation were reminded that dangers are always present during military service. Fairchild Air Force Base had four Convair B-36 crashes. The deadliest came on April 15, 1952, killing 15 of the 17 men on board. Fairchild transitioned from the Convair B-36 to the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress heavy bomber in 1956.
