Normal mapping you can make it look like 250,000 polygons. So yes, it reduces a lot of calculation on CPU & GPU , by just adding cost effective extra layer of mapping Best for games where there are lot of more stuff to calculate at same time. So Normal mapping option add a little extra cost but it reduces a lot of cost than making this item
American Truck simulator appeals more to Americans. Euro Truck Simulator appeals to more Europeans and there's way more of us. Also like you said it's older. Unlike other games, these type of games tend to have a more loyal following (Flight Sim being a good example of that as a nearly 12yr old game).

The official scale for ATS is 1:20 and for ETS2 it's 1:19 (EU)/1:15 (UK)/1:3 (cities). But the time is also scaled. In fact, in a little experiment I just did in ATS, it appears time is scaled based on how fast you move. In can't really wrap my head around this. But what is the actual scale of the game then?

Wouldn't call the euro trucks dated, as e.g. DAF uses the same Paccar engines as Peterbilt and Kenworth does. They're all owned by Paccar too. The Mack MP8 is basically the same as the Euro Volvo's D13 engine. IRRC, both Mack and Volvo engines are also built on the same production line. Mack's M-drive is almost the same as Euro Volvo's I-shift.

Euro Truck sim 2 is mostly complete. American Truck Sim is just beginning (and got a slow start because they changed the world scale early on). So if you want to drive long distances and feel like a real long haul trucker, then Euro Truck Sim 2 (with all the DLC) is probably better. Both are really good, but ETS 2 has been out for far longer
