Yeah, just hire then and leave them be. I have 2 caravans and 1 party of random chuckle♥♥♥♥ empire recruits and whatever they got from bandit parties (mostly peasants) and by virtue of them doing arse tonnes of quests they generated 2-3k per day. Meanwhile 2 long running caravans make 200-400gp per day whilst also costing 200 gp each.
The problem with companions that have something like 120 in medicine is that their focus points and/or attributes in the thing they are good at is low. Had a companion with 80 in engineering, only 2 focus points and 2 intelligence. My main problem is that the game doesn't tell you how much they gonna cost over time.
